From Locs to TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro)

Okay … this posting will be about Hair. That’s right … hair! In particular …my hair!  I have been wearing my hair in locs for the past 25 years, and all I had to do was wash it every 30 days, put in color and have the roots retwisted. Getting out to work in the mornings was a breeze. Get dressed and out the door. No fuss… No muss.

I had my loctician retwist my roots and when I cut it short I started retwisting it myself.  I cut it about a dozen times in the 25 years I had them.  During the end of my journey with locs I decided to cut them off completely and rock a curly twa (teeny weeny afro) until it grows out due to the fact that my locs were getting thinner and my hair was going bald in some places.  I wanted to get my hair back into a healthy state. My loctician warned me however, that my whole routine would change once I cut it. I thought … what could be so difficult about caring for natural hair?  Back in the day, when I was growing up, we all had afros and I would just pick it out, spray a little shine on it and go. Boy was I in for a rude awakening! She was right.

When I looked online for hair careproducts I got lost and confused. I literally had to be schooled on what type of hair I had and what were the right products (natural) needed to care for my type of hair and give it the look I wanted. I talked to some of my co-workers that had natural hair, and watched YouTube videos for hours in a day only to be more confused as to what to use for my particular type of hair.  I spent way too much money on products that didn’t work and spent a lot of time in the beauty supply stores and online.  Luckily I was able to sell most of the products that were not working for me. Whew!

Finally … I came up with some answers and solutions that worked for me.  One of my co- workers told me about flax seed gel, which you can make yourself that helps to define your curl pattern, which by the way I lost most of by having locs for so many years. – (ughhh!)  So now I am in the kitchen making a gel from flax seeds.. who knew.  And in my YouTube and Internet journey to find the right products and routine, I came across a product line called “Alikay Naturals”, by Rochelle Alikay Graham-Campbell, https://alikaynaturals.com/ which hence the name, had all good ingredients in their products that would be good for your hair to keep it healthy and make it grow.  These products are the bomb.com you all, if you have natural hair, you need to give it a try.

They have ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, avocado oil, coconut oil, honey, and lemongrass, just to name a few.  Head on over to her website and check her out.  Her line is for Kinky, Curly, Wavy, Straight, Locs and Color Treated hair.  She even has a baby line, a Bath and Body and Skin Care line.  I am so hooked.  So here I am.  The picture in this post is what my hair looks like currently,  you can see a picture of me in my Locs in the “About” section.  Stay tuned.. I’m on this natural journey of healthy hair.

If you have any stories about your natural journey with your hair, please do not hesitate to share.  We can all help each other.  I will be reviewing products as I go, so check out my blog twice a week for some updates.  I will also be talking and reviewing other products that are not about  hair.  This should be fun.  Until Next time… Stay Healthy !!
